Josh Groth                      KHS Jazz Ensemble

On Saturday, May 17th the KHS Jazz Ensemble will be performing at a Frisco Rouchriders Baseball Game.  We will be playing music during the pregame warm-up, as well as the National Anthem and much of the in-game music.  If you are unsure of who the Roughriders are, they are the AA Minor League Affiliate for the Texas Rangers. This is very exciting for us and we would love to see you out at the ball park.  We will be playing on the concourse around section 119 and 120 on the 1st base side.  I don't know if any tickets are still available in that area but we will be miced and projected around the stadium.  I believe the game starts at 7:00 pm.  Come support our kids and enjoy a great night of baseball.  If you have any questions you can e-mail me or visit the Roughriders website @ www.ridersbaseball.com.

Kaufman FFA County Show 2008

The Kaufman FFA had a successful 2008 County Show last week.
Kaufman had 23 entries qualify for the auction where students raised approximately $24,000.
They received first place in swine and goat herdsmanship and received the prestigious President’s Award.
These students worked extremely hard and represented our district well.
We are very proud of their accomplishments.
Thanks,
James & Carey Murphy

Bobby McCoy                          KJHS Band

The KJHS Band had a banner contest this year reaching historical heights and establishing a name for Kaufman in the music education ranks. At the UIL concert and Sight Reading contest, Kaufman now has two competing bands. Last Wednesday, the concert Band received a Division II UIL rating of “Excellent” and the Symphonic Band received a Division I rating of “Superior” form all 6 judges. This score earned the Kaufman Band a UIL sweepstakes trophy for a historical second time. Our Junior High Bands went to the majestic theater last Friday to compete in the Big D classic with performing groups from all of our surrounding states and as far away as Canada. The Symphonic Band and the Concert Band both received the highest marks of “1” Superior for their division. At the Awards Ceremony this weekend at Six Flags, our symphonic Band was honored as the highest scoring instrumental group and awarded the “Best In Festival” trophy.

FCCLA State Competition

This past week FCCLA competed at the state competition in Galveston.  Barbara Gonzales, Britney Burchfield and Lorena Villalpandro took home 3rd place in the chapter showcase.  They had to make a display of all the activities that FCCLA has completed this school year.  They also were interviewed by three judges.  Ashli Bennett took home 4th place in Career Investigations.  She had to make three portfolios explaining her career choice and how she can achieve them.  She was also interviewed by three judges as well.  These students worked very hard and they represented Kaufman very well.  If you see any of them today, give them a big pat on the back for their achievements!

The Lullaby of Broadway

The choir is putting on their spring concert and this year’s theme is Broadway. We have a diverse selection of   plays. Examples are “The Wizard of Qz”, “Wicked”, “Jersey Boys” and “Le Miserable`”. Along with the song selections there are going to be a host of solos and ensembles. This year we are going back t o past and bring the oldies back to the future. Kei’Trea Wren, Lisa Jenkins, Julia Warren, and Marshall McKinney and Marisol Saenz, just to name a few, will be performing solos. There will be a slide show for the seniors. The concert starts at 7:00p.m so come out and support the KHS choir.

Llurisel Parra:     Meeting The Standards
Journalism Student

As days go by, the end of the school year approaches quickly. A student must pass the TAKS test in order to move onto the next grade.  The TAKS test is a standardized test given at every grade level from second grade to eleventh grade.  These tests require many hours of preparation.  Here at KHS the students prepare by taking benchmarks throughout the year. There are four subjects that the TAKS tests cover.  They are english, history, math, and science.  Each test has a different passing level. These tests are usually given around April but this year the ELA portion will be taken on Wednesday March 5. When taking these tests the teachers must be very strict. For example, all cell phones must be turned off and given to the teacher, nothing is allowed at the student’s desk except a pencil, and all backpacks are to be placed in the front of the room.  These tests are sometimes very stressful to some students. The pressure of meeting the states standards sometimes becomes overwhelming.  TAKS test is a mandatory state test and many students are relieved once testing is completed.  Kaufman High School is very fortunate to have on staff Mrs. Linda LyBrand.  She prepares the teachers and students throughout the year for TAKS testing.  Her passion is evident through each and every extra effort she puts forth to make sure that the test run smoothly and successfully.

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America

Friday February 8, 2008 was a groundbreaking day for Kaufman’s FCCLA.  Five teams competed at the regional competition and three advanced to the state competition.  Not only did the FCCLA advance to state, but Kaufman earned two first place wins and one fourth place win.  Ashli Bennett ventured the career of an elementary teacher and placed first in Career Investigations.  First place was also awarded to Britney Burchfield in Chapter Showcase because of her exceptional presentation that emphasized all of the activities that occurred throughout this school year.  Miranda Morales and Sathina Ramirez created a power point of the impacts of teen pregnancy for Applied Technology; they earned fourth place.  Moreover, FCCLA of Kaufman earned amazing results even though they competed against all divisions of schools in this region.  Due to their exceptional efforts, these three groups will advance to the state competition this April in Galveston.  Amber Wood, Barbara Gonzales, Lorena Villapandro, and Mirna Renteria also competed.

And The Winner Is...,  Cyndi Maldonado

On January 9, 2008, Kaufman High School senior, Caitlin Bradley, had the opportunity of a lifetime. She got to attend a Dallas Mavericks home game versus the Detroit Pistons. Before the game, she got to shoot hoops and talk with some of the team captains like Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Josh Howard, and even join the captain’s circle. “I thought Dirk was the best, he was the sweetest. He asked for a hug and I couldn’t say no,” stated Bradley.  She won the tickets through the Apple Orthodontics Livewire Contest.  Without her knowing, Caitlin’s mom had submitted an essay explaining why she thought that Caitlin should be nominated for the tickets. Caitlin is a member of the Kaufman NHS, Student Council, and the basketball and softball teams. Recently, Caitlin signed a letter of intent to play softball for Texas Wesleyan University and to pursue a career in Special Education.

1/22/07- Scholarships, Kei' Trea Wren

There are millions of dollars in scholarship money that are going to waste year after year. There is a website that all students should visit that could help them find money.  The website is Finaid.com. There are many current seniors who are not aware of the money they are missing out on and how to go about finding it.  The sad reality is that it will eventually just go to waste. College tuition is getting higher and higher each year. There are many students who come from low income families and their hopes and dreams are diminished by their families’ inability to pay for the high cost of today’s tuitions. There are good chances that if you just go on the website and just sign up for at least one scholarship that you may be the recipient of a scholarship and get enough money to pay for you first year of college. So don’t be lazy and wait on people to do things for you!  Just go to the website and look around!  You never know what you may find for you, your life, your schooling, and most important your future.
