Region II-AAA UIL Tennis Tournament
Results from the 3A Regional Tennis Tournament:
Girls Doubles:
#5 seed Megan England/Kailey Lampkin defeated Smith/Lay (6-1, 6-3) from Van in the first round to advance to the quarters against the #4 seed Frisco Wakeland. Bond/Floyd of Frisco Wakeland had best us earlier in the year in the Kaufman tournament but England and Lampkin were on, especially in the 3rd set. They won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Wednesday morning, they had to face the #1 seed from Springhill, Megan Cameron and Sarah Veralli. This team had not been best by anyone in the Region so I knew it would be tough, in fact we were down 0-3 in the first set before we made a push to come back. We won the first set 6-4, then got down in the second set 1-3. It went to a tie-breaker, which we won 7-4. It was the upset of the tournament, when the #5 seed defeated the #1 seed. England and Lampkin went on to play in the finals and lost to Wills Point who played a great match, 6-2, 6-4. They still ended up winning second in the tournament.
Boys singles: Josh Scales defeated Alan Knight (Atlanta) 6-0, 6-0
Josh Walters def Jared Royman (Wills Point) 7-6, 7-3, 6-3
Girls singles: Crystal Hernandez def Alondra Perez (DH Jarvis) 6-1, 6-0
Boys doubles:BJ Vincik/Randy Davis def S. Mercy/A. Perticone (TX–Pl. Grove) 6-4, 6-4
Girls doubles: Katie Mitchell/Jessica Scales def Carrillo/Villeda (DH Jarvis) 6-3, 6-2
Mixed doubles: Vibi Patel/Tyson Perry lost to Natalie Hand/Josh Wilgus (Van) 7-5, 6-2; the Van team went on to win the tournament.
Kaufman Lion Baseball Team
Curt Eurich/ Head Coach
The Kaufman Lion Baseball Team finished the regular season with wins over Eustace and Crandall last week. The Lions finished the regular season with 14 wins, 6 of those in District play, and a District Championship! Ethan Martin was the 6-5 winner vs. Eustace and Chris Wood is credited with the save. Zach Mayo got the 4-1 win over Crandall giving him an outstanding 7-win regular season on the mound. Friday night was truly amazing. Standing room only! I want to thank those who have taken the time to attend and support these young men. Seeing our park lined with coaches, teachers, staff, students, and administrators definitely gave us a boost. We will play Eustace Tuesday in Mabank at 4:00 which will begin the 3-Team playoff for the District seeds leading to the playoffs. If we win, we will play Kemp at 7:00 pm for 1st and 2nd seeds. If we lose, will be the 3rd seed. Again, thank you for the support.

February Tennis Update
It was a perfect day for tennis on Friday, February 8, 2008 as the tennis team was competing in the Forney Tournament. The doubles teams played at the Forney tennis site and the singles competed at the Kaufman site. Josh Scales earned second place in singles behind a Mesquite High School Super Champ. After a rocky first match loss, Crystal Hernandez cruised to victory in consolations in girl’s singles. Over at Forney, Jessica Scales and Katie Mitchell earned first place in girl’s doubles. Overall, the tournament had fierce competition and the Kaufman Lions earned fourth place.
The Cedar Hill V-Day Tournament was a good day for the Kaufman Lion’s Varsity Tennis Team. The tournament was packed with teams ranging all the way to 5A. The girl’s singles obliterated the competition as both “A” and “B” girl’s singles won first place. Katie Mitchell (“A” singles) and Megan England (“B” singles) walked away with hardware as well as helped the Lions earn third place overall. Vibi Patel and Kaily Lampkin earned third place in “B” doubles. Josh Scales and Tyson Perry got fourth place in boy’s “A” doubles. Jared Shelton and Libby Walther advanced to the finals of Consolation in mixed doubles but did not prevail.
2/14/2008, A Strike To Start Off The Season
The KHS Lady Lions softball team was supposed to play at home against Quinlan-Ford on Tuesday night, February 12th, but due to rain, the game was rescheduled for last night, the 13th. Third basemen, Caitlin Bradley stated, “I am excited with what we have to work with this year and real impressed with the outcome of the game and I can’t wait to see how this season will turn out.” The Lady Lions had one bad inning that Bradley notes, “We can’t afford to have, but we never gave up and kept fighting to finish the game.” The girls fought back to close the Lady Panthers lead to only three, but they couldn’t close the gap enough to pull out with a win. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Highland Park.
Mark Harris: A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FROM THE LADY LIONS!!!
The Lady Lions basketball team completed their season last night falling to Canton in the Bi- District Championship Game. The past two games have been heartbreaking losses. Despite these losses, the Lady Lions have had a great year. Starting the season with a record of 2-9 the Lady Lions finished 22-13 and a district Co-Championship. These kids are a lesson in dedication and perseverance. Many of you do not see the work these kids do in May, June, and July and the blood, sweat, and tears that occur before they play their first game in November. They represented our school very well this season. The team appreciates the support from all the schools and administration. Our seniors this year were Christa Day, Caitlan Bradley, Kaci Strother, and She'tara Stein. Kaci will continue her education and continue to play basketball at East Texas Baptist. Caitlan will continue her education and play softball at Texas Wesleyan. Christa will attend Wayland Baptist and continue to play basketball. She'tara will continue her education at TVCC next year. Many of you have taught and helped these young ladies succeed. THANKS AGAIN FROM THE LADY LIONS!!!

Attention! Kaufman County has under gone a new district alignment. Kaufman's new District 12-3A will consist of Kaufman, Crandall, Ferris, Alvarado, Venus and Kennedale.
1/31/08, Lions Basketball
Suzy LaQuey
With a major upset, on Friday, January 25, 2008, The Lions basketball team played at Crandall and lost by 5pts, 54 to 49. The lions were 34.78 percent on 2-pointers and 39 percent on free throws. “We have to figure out how to not beat ourselves-before we can win!” stated Coach White. The two top scores for the night were David Miles with 12 pts. and Deon Wells with 10pts. The boys were looking to for a come back on Tuesday Jan. 29 but unfortunately come up short. The final score was 47 to 50. The Lions should be able to bounce back from their loss in the upcoming game at Ferris high school, Friday Feb. 1.
KHS Soccer- January 25, 2008
Lauren Puente
The men’s soccer teams played throughout Friday night and while the JV won, the varsity lost by merely one goal. For the men’s varsity team, the night was long and they only managed to score once by Humberto Barbosa. Terrell managed to score two goals making the final score 2-1 in favor of the Tigers. The JV men’s soccer team quickly came out on top with only four minutes into the game. Jesus Beltran scored a goal and Carlos Bautista made the assist. Brian Hooten set up Anthony Ford-Richardson to score the second goal. Later on, Arthur Palomo sealed the victory by scoring off an assist from Travis Parker.
The girl’s varsity game was certainly compelling as they lost a nail-biter in Terrell on Friday, January 25, 2008. Even though the field was in horrible condition, the game went on. Terrell scored several goals to take a comfortable lead at 3-1. The game stirred up some skepticism once Terrell scored their third goal due to a penalty. Terrell expanded their lead by scoring another goal. Even though Terrell had a commanding lead at 4-1, the Lady Lions continued to fight. The game clock was winding down and with merely eight minutes left, the girls scored three goals to decrease Terrell’s lead. Meredith Cox scored two goals and assisted one goal; Alex Villarreal scored one goal and had two assists. With only five seconds left, the opposing keeper blocked Kaufman’s final attempt at tying the game. Despite great effort, the girls lost the game to make their in-district record 2-1.

1/14/07- Power Lifting, Jake Maddox
This year, the Kaufman Power Lifting team has high expectations for two of its seniors, Chris Brent and Nathan Olivarez. Both lifters have made it to Regionals the past two years and last year Brent missed state by one place. He finished 3rd in Regionals and was an alternate lifter for the state meet. This year Brent believes he can make it all the way to state in the 242 pound weight class. Nathan Olivarez will be moving up this year from the 132 weight class to the 148 weight class. This transition will make it harder for Olivarez, but he firmly believes that he will overcome the challenge and have a successful season.
